Looks like we made it…to Wednesday!
This week we have four digital marketing stories to share and a not-for-profit we want to make sure is on your radar. Let’s go:
- Wow: “Netflix is so good at targeted content promotion that an estimated 80 percent of content streamed on its platform is influenced by its recommendation system.” This gem from ClickZ discusses the ways Netflix uses big data to develop its content, vet ideas, and manage user experience.
- Google is in trouble again, this time for what the EU calls unfair advertising practices: demanding exclusive deals from websites running its ads and thereby blocking competitors. When is exclusivity a good marketing lever and when does it get companies in hot water? Ethics galore.
Non-Profit Spotlight: Charity: Water
Did you know Charity: Water was founded by Scott Harrison, a guy from New Jersey (born in Philly, grew up in Hunterdon County, NJ) ? This global not-for-profit is dedicated to improving technologies used for sourcing and purifying water. I’ve supported Charity Water for years for two main reasons: 1) We’re all united by our need for clean drinking water and 2) We’re all going to need the technologies Charity: Water and others are pioneering as drinkable water becomes more scarce and global populations rise. Oh, and climate change, can’t forget that. Charity: Water scores an impressive 91.16 on Charity Navigator’s 100-point scale (and scores 100% for transparency). Click on Charity: Water to learn more about the innovation brilliance of this organization and its amazing team of volunteers.
- More ways to target audiences on LinkedIn! “Lookalike audiences, audience templates, and interest targeting with LinkedIn and Microsoft Bing data will become available to all advertisers within two weeks.” Here’s the detail a la Media Post.
- One more, one more! Instagram has announced a checkout feature in mobile apps. Not for everyone yet, it’s being rolled out with about 20 big brands. We’re already thinking about how to use this, it’s exciting!
That’s it for this week. Please reach out if you’d like to talk about these or other digital marketing news stories or trends.
